Ranginui - Looking Up
A Mid-Term Mauri Check-In for Kaiako
Download the accompanying Ranginui - Looking Up resource here
As we move further into the term, this can be a time when things begin to feel a little heavier for
kaiako. There is always something more to do, another person needing our attention, and sometimes
our own wellbeing can slowly move further down the list.
So, this might be a good time to simply ask: Where is my mauri at?
Mauri is often described as our life force or vitality. I also like to think about mauri as something we
can notice in ourselves. At times our mauri can feel strong and energised, while at other times we may
feel tired, flat, overwhelmed or simply need some space to restore ourselves.
Our mauri can shift and change depending on what is happening within us and around us.
Te Whare Mauri Ora is a holistic model of wellbeing created by Wiremu Gray in 2017. It is now a well-recognised approach being used across education and health settings throughout Aotearoa.
The whare brings together five pou of wellbeing; Tinana, Hinengaro, Whānau, Wairua and Mauri Ora, with Mauri at its centre. Papatūānuku providing the foundation below, and Ranginui, the skies above, representing hope, goals and achievement.
For this mid-term reflection, we invite you to look towards Ranginui.
When we are busy, we can spend a lot of time thinking about what we haven't done, rather than
recognising what we have.
Take a moment to look up.
-
What have you already achieved this term?
-
What is going well, even if it is something small?
-
Who or what is helping to strengthen your mauri?
-
What do you have to look forward to?
Hope doesn't always need to be something big. Sometimes having one small thing on the horizon can
help strengthen our mauri and keep us moving forward.
Keep the accompanying Ranginui, Looking Up resource somewhere visible, on your wall, beside your
desk, in the staffroom or even on the fridge at home, as a gentle reminder to pause, notice and look up.
