Who Helped Me Belong Today?

Belonging isn't built through big moments. More often, it's the small, everyday interactions that help tamariki feel noticed, valued, and connected. A smile, an invitation to join a game, someone saving them a seat, or simply being asked how they're doing can all send a powerful message.

Who Helped Me Belong Today?

Firstly, the science...

Research consistently shows that a strong sense of belonging is one of the biggest protective factors for children's wellbeing. Feeling accepted and connected supports learning, confidence, resilience, and positive mental health.

Taking time to reflect on moments of belonging helps because it:

Strengthens connection: Looking back on positive interactions reminds tamariki that they are supported and valued by those around them.

Builds empathy: Reflecting on how others helped them belong encourages tamariki to think about how they can create those same experiences for others.

Reinforces positive behaviours: When acts of kindness and inclusion are noticed, they become more likely to be repeated.

Why this activity?

This activity creates a quiet opportunity to pause and notice the small moments that helped tamariki feel included, encouraged, or supported.

It also reminds tamariki that belonging is something we create together. Every smile, invitation, encouraging word, or act of kindness can make a meaningful difference to someone else's day.

You'll need

  • A few quiet minutes at the end of the day

  • Optional: reflection journals, sticky notes, or small pieces of paper

What to do

At the end of the day, invite tamariki to spend a minute quietly reflecting on their day.

Ask them to think about someone who helped them feel included, noticed, or supported.

To guide them you might try some prompts:

  • I felt part of our class today when…

  • Someone made room for me when…

  • I helped someone belong by…

If you're using journals or sticky notes, encourage tamariki to write or draw their reflection. Over time, using these prompts regularly along side a journal tamariki can create a wonderful collection of moments that remind them that they belong.

Whānau engagement

Encourage tamariki to continue the reflection at home by sharing with whānau one moment from their day when they felt they belonged, and one thing they did to help someone else feel included.

And to add to this...

For another simple way to strengthen connection and help tamariki notice what they have in common, try our activity Same, Same, which encourages tamariki to discover the experiences they share with one another.
